Machine Landscapes
April 19 - May 10, 2026
Lowell Ryan Projects is pleased to present Machine Landscapes, an online exhibition comprised of ten oil on canvas paintings by Andee Collard. Each work, measuring approximately 16 × 12 inches (41 × 31 cm), begins with photographs taken by the artist—fragments of terrain, sky, and shifting weather—processed through AI and translated into plotted structures before returning to the canvas. A hillside, a horizon, a stretch of water, these are places we recognize, but not entirely. The images feel both found and constructed.
Collard’s method moves through systems rather than through the direct touch of the hand alone. Working with a pen plotter machine, Collard paints directly onto the canvas in oil, using software he has developed to guide the movement of the brush across the surface. The image is built through programmed marks, layered strokes, and repeated passes, so that what emerges is both mechanically produced and visibly painterly. Variation in density, rhythm, and texture comes through the interaction between digital structure, the movement of the machine, and the material properties of paint. Collard’s work, in many ways, is hand-painted by machine.
The titles of the works—Menai Strait, Smithills Pond, Leigh Branch, and Tywyn – Tal Y Llyn—map a quiet terrain network in Northern England and Wales, where Andee Collard (who lives and works in Bolton, UK) lets a programmed system interpret the landscape, translating place into a language between code and gesture.
The modest scale draws the viewer close, the surface opening into strokes—dense, dispersed, or lightly held—each carrying a sense of intention. Color is felt as much as seen; greens settle, skies loosen, and darker passages hold the image in place. From a distance, the landscape resolves, but its construction remains present.
Andee Collard (b. 1979, Redhill, UK) works between machine and image, using CNC, plotting technologies, and AI to create paintings that question how images are made and who—or what—makes them.
